  • Lets do something we don't normally do anymore. Lets stop and think.....it won't hurt I promise. Well, not too badly anyway and I'm sure we can recover and dive right back into the pool of happily veiled and complacent living. anyways....moving on

I've been thinking about this phrase that I've heard off and on from different Christian people. A phrase I've used myself and that is often a source of encouragement. Goes to show you how much we actually think about what we say. The phrase is "God never asked us to win, just to fight". You've heard it in some form, it references our habitual failures to temptation. Lets think about the validity of it though shall we?

Is it true? Did God never ask us to win? The truth in it is on two levels. First, we can't win, victory is His alone, we are honored to share in it. Second, as far as I know the Bible never sins "win or else, victory or death, veni vidi vici" and in truth, this doesn't always happen. So we are right in saying this in so far as we mean, keep up the good fight, never give up. But there is a danger.

Keeping up the good fight means at least you are fighting. To win you must resist. What I have found is that we too often use "we must fight but not win" as an excuse to not fight at all. We forgive ourselves (without seeking forgiveness from the Father I might add) and shrug off whatever we have done saying "victory is not the important thing, fighting is" while somehow managing to forget that we never put up a fight at all. We end up adopting as our attitude a stance that really, we mostly don't win and its ok because at least we tried. WRONG. If that were true then we wouldn't need judgment as long as we've tried. We forget that God has promised that no test is too big for us, that we are given the strength to conquer every time. You want to know if you're maturing as a Christian? Its not how much you know, but how much you do. Action produces maturity with the fertilizer of knowledge. Look at your latest string of victories/defeats, I'm guessing it will provide a pretty stark and honest picture of where you stand.

It comes down to this, a phrase that can really be an encouragement to the Believer who is struggling, becomes a pitfall and an excuse for laziness for most of us who are just strolling through the Christian walk. We through mud at the faces of the martyrs when we apply this to ourselves.

Fight with the intention to win, knowing we have the power to do so! Thank God he is merciful when we don't.

  • Emotions and feelings are two of our Enemy's best weapons. By focusing our attention on ourselves and the immediate, we lose track of the eternal and the important. Trivial circumstances are made as immovable mountains. We cannot force ourselves to see around them, they become our reality. Most dangerous is when we do see around them, and willfully ignore their existence.
Friends, focus on the Eternal, not just on the inward self, but more on how what we "believe" and what we actually do play out in our lives. It's easy to believe, action is harder. Emotions and feeling focus our view inward so that we do not even consider whether we actually live what we profess. If we see anything at all, we see only that it is desirable to act a certain way. And then we stop, thinking no further. Complacency is death.
See around the smoke screen of immediate happiness, for it is a golden mist in which we can wander happily until we stumble into the pit that it covers. And stumble we will.
Work continually to move the virtues that are placed on our heart outwards, to where they can make real contact with real people.

    Entry Number One

Though it is true that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, there is a less familiar, though by no means less valid health fact associated with the wonderful hops. This remarkable fact proves the validity oh Heineken and other fine brews to your health. Not only is this fact beneficial to your health, but it also will save you money. After years of research and sound medical studies, ladies and gentleman, the conclusion is....a beer a day keeps the shrink away.
